Why Airflow polishing?

Airflow polishing is a dental hygiene treatment which cleans teeth faster, safer and more effectively than traditional teeth cleaning treatments. Traditional teeth cleaning uses a sharp, pointed instrument called a scaler to scrape plaque from the teeth. Instead, airflow polishing uses a jet of water mixed with a mildly abrasive powder to “jetwash” your teeth, removing plaque, stains and biofilm (surface bacteria which can contribute to dental issues).

Airflow polishing is a less intrusive and more efficient treatment than traditional teeth cleaning. It provides fast removal of plaque, stains, and other unhealthy surface compounds. The abrasive powder polishes the teeth in the process, leading to a whiter smile without the risk of damaging the enamel which is inherent in scraping treatments.

The Airflow polishing process

Initial Assessment: The process begins with an assessment from the dentist or hygienist to ensure your suitability for Airflow treatment, check for any underlying issues and explain the process to you. If you have heavy plaque deposits, other treatments may be advised in advance of Airflow polishing to remove these.

Disclosing Agents: To ensure all unhealthy deposits are removed from your teeth during Airflow polishing, a disclosing agent is applied to your teeth. This is a bright blue or red dye which sticks to unhealthy surface deposits but not to clean and healthy teeth. This allows the dentist or hygienist to see easily with the naked eye where there are unhealthy deposits which need to be removed.

Airflow Polishing Treatment: During Airflow polishing, the dentist or hygienist uses a handheld device to deliver a stream of compressed air, water and abrasive powder. They will work through your mouth cleaning each tooth individually until all plaque and stains have been removed and polishing is complete. The practitioner or their assistant will also use another small handheld device to suck or “hoover” away the cleaning solution from your mouth during the treatment. The process typically takes around 30 minutes.

Airflow polishing is a painless and gentle treatment that can be carried out without the need for anaesthetic.

Who is Airflow polishing suitable for?

Airflow polishing is a versatile procedure that is suitable for most general dental patients who have mild to moderate teeth staining or plaque buildup. Its gentle nature also makes it particularly suitable for nervous patients or individuals with special needs, and patients with fixed orthodontics or tooth restorations such as fillings or crowns.

In some cases Airflow is not an appropriate treatment and other methods should be used. These include patients with active dental infections, severe gum disease or similar dental issues, in which cases the underlying problems must be treated and allowed to heal before moving on to cosmetic treatments. Airflow is also unsuitable for some people with respiratory illnesses or sensitivity, due to the likelihood of breathing in small particles during the treatment.

At your appointment your dentist will examine your teeth and explain any relevant factors to ensure you have the right treatment for you.
