Your dental crown at our Fulham clinic

A crown is a dental treatment which restores strength, functionality and aesthetics to a damaged tooth. It is a simple treatment that is versatile enough to be used in a wide range of applications, and a common procedure carried out at dental surgeries.

At Blue Finch Dental Fulham we offer dental crowns as part of a comprehensive range of restorative dental treatments. We are a welcoming, family-run clinic in a peaceful first-floor location. We pride ourselves in clinical excellence and in explaining that the option of a crown is usually one of many treatment choices which we will explain in a simple, everyday language, enabling you to be fully involved in your treatment choices and to be confident in choosing the right treatments for you.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown (also known as a dental cap) is a prosthetic device that is placed over the entire tooth to restore shape, size, appearance and functionality. A bit like a thimble fitted over your finger. You can think of it as a long-lasting cover for a damaged tooth, which looks exactly how the original tooth should.

Dental crowns are created in a dental laboratory to fit your teeth and mouth perfectly, matching the size, shape and colour of your other teeth so that others will not be able to tell whether you have a crown or a natural tooth. Properly looked after, crowns can last for many decades.

Why might I need a dental crown?

There are various reasons why your dentist might recommend a dental crown, including:

Protecting a weakened tooth – teeth which have been weakened by decay, which are fractured, or which have undergone large fillings and may need extra protection to avoid becoming damaged again in the future. In this case, the crown acts first and foremost as a protective cover over the tooth.

Covering misshapen or discoloured teeth – dental crowns can be used for purely aesthetic purposes if you have a tooth which is misshapen or has other cosmetic problems.

Completing root canal or other treatment – following any treatment where some of the natural tooth needs to be removed (for example in order to access and remove diseased nerve tissue within the tooth), a crown may be recommended to complete the treatment. The crown may restore the tooth’s natural aesthetics and help replace lost strength.

To support a dental bridge – a dental bridge is a treatment for a missing tooth which involves replacing the missing tooth with a prosthetic or “fake”  tooth, secured on either side to a crown.

Types of dental crown

We offer several different crown materials at Blue Finch Dental. The right choice for you depends on budget, aesthetics, and the role of the tooth. For example a molar (back tooth) needs to be particularly strong for chewing, but is rarely seen by anyone else. A front tooth may not need the same kind of durability, but will be visible when you smile.

Porcelain bonded to metal – porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns are a commonly used type of crown where the base material is metal, providing strength for biting and chewing, covered by a porcelain material which gives the appearance of natural teeth.

Different types of base metal are available for PFM crowns. Precious metals such as gold offer increased durability, are more compatible with your body’s natural chemistry, and are more easily manipulated by dental professionals. On the other hand, non-precious metals alloys are significantly cheaper, whilst still being safe for dental use.

Lithium disilicate (E-Max) and Zirconium crowns – lithium disilicate (also known by the brand name E-Max) and zirconium are ceramic materials that are designed for dental crowns. They both offer excellent aesthetic appearance and strength and are highly compatible with your body. They are both highly durable and suitable for both front and back teeth.

Your dentist will be happy to talk you through the various options, and help you choose the right type of crown for you.

The dental crown procedure

There are various steps to creating and fitting a crown, necessitating at least two visits to the clinic.

Following an initial assessment and decision to go ahead with a crown, the tooth will be prepared. This normally means removing some of the outer surface of the tooth to shape it in order to fit the crown over the top. Your dentist will then take an impression (mould) of your tooth or scan it to send to the dental lab to create your crown. They may also fit a temporary crown in the meantime, to protect the tooth which will be crowned.

Once your crown has been created by the dental lab and returned to the clinic, there will be another session to fit the crown. During this session the fit and look of the crown will be checked, then your dentist will permanently cement the crown over the tooth. They may then make some final adjustments to ensure the crown fits in perfectly with your other teeth, and provide you with any necessary instructions and advice for its care.

Caring for dental crowns

For the most part, dental crowns require no specialist care beyond the typical oral health advice that any dentist would recommend. For example, brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, avoiding smoking and maintaining general oral health, and coming for regular dental check-ups. You should also try to avoid things like biting your nails, chewing pens, etc., particularly if you do so using your crown tooth.

Dental crown pricing

Dental crown prices range between £630 and £990 depending on the type of crown you might need. For more information visit our fees page.
