Fillings at Blue Finch Dental

Fillings are a common minor dental procedure that many people will have in their lifetime. They are used to remove decayed or broken pieces of tooth, then “fill” the gap left behind with material that looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

At Blue Finch Dental Fulham we offer fillings as part of a comprehensive range of dental treatments. We are a welcoming, family-run clinic in a peaceful first-floor location. We pride ourselves in clinical excellence and in explaining our treatments in simple, everyday language, enabling you to be fully involved in your treatment choices and to be confident in choosing the right treatments for you.  Nervous patients are welcome.

What is a dental filling?

A filling is a treatment used to repair decayed teeth. The decayed or diseased area is removed from the tooth after using local anaesthetic, using a drill or other dental instruments. Once this is done only healthy tooth structure is left, ensuring there is no chance of further decay or infection.

The removal of the diseased part of the tooth will leave a gap or loss of shape. This is then “filled” using a special material to reconstruct the tooth or fill the gap left behind by the removal of the missing portion. A range of materials are available for this purpose, all of which are designed to restore strength and aesthetics, looking and functioning just like a natural tooth.

Why might you need a filling?

Fillings are generally required when cavities – areas of decay on the surface of the tooth – have developed. This is typically due to plaque buildup caused by inadequate brushing, sugary drinks and foods, etc.

Fillings might also be required for several other reasons: grooves or pits in the tooth enamel making it more difficult to keep the teeth clean. Tooth wear after excessive clenching or grinding may also wear teeth. People who experience a dry mouth might also be more at risk of cavities as saliva acts as a natural cleanser for the mouth. Age can weaken tooth enamel, making cavities more likely, and gastric reflux can also increase mouth acid levels, contributing to cavities.

Types of dental fillings

There are different compounds available for fillings, depending on your particular case. Your dentist will give you a recommendation and help you decide on the best choice for you.

The most common type of filling is a composite filling. The composite compound contains various components including a resin, colour pigments, and other substances which play a part in hardening, and bonding the filling to the tooth.

An alternative compound known as glass ionomer is also used in certain situations, especially in paediatric dentistry, for patients who have excessive saliva production, or other particular cases. Glass ionomer fillings are cheaper, and whilst most appropriate in some cases are generally not as strong or aesthetically pleasing as composite fillings. We will explain all options available to you.

The filling process

The process of having a dental filling placed is straightforward and minor fillings may well be carried out at your initial appointment.

Following an examination and after you have decided about all filling options, your dentist will administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be filled. This will ensure you stay comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your dentist will use a drill or air abrasion to remove any damaged or decayed tissue from the tooth. Once all the damaged tissue has been removed, your dentist will prepare the area for the filling. To do this they will ensure the area is clean and free of debris.

Your dentist will then place the filling material on the tooth, and shape and polish it to ensure it fits with your other teeth both functionally and aesthetically. Your dentist will then carry out a final examination to ensure the correct function of your filling, and give you information and advice on caring for your filling and avoiding any activities which could damage it.

What alternatives are there to fillings?

Fillings are a minor and conservative dental procedure and are generally the most appropriate treatment for minor cavities. For more extensive decay your dentist may recommend another option such as inlays, onlays or crowns.

All of these are lab-created prosthetics which fit over the tooth, rather than simply filling in the gap. Inlays and onlays cover part of the tooth, whilst crowns cover the entire tooth. Your dentist will advise on the best solution in your particular case.

Filling Costs

Fillings are priced according to the extent of the filling, with very minor fillings costing less than a more extensive reconstruction.

Glass ionomer fillings are cheaper, and only used in minor or temporary cases. We are currently offering a range of introductory offers on our treatments.

Filling prices range between £81 and £279 depending on the type of filling you might need.
