Tooth loss can happen for many reasons. Even with the best oral hygiene, decades of wear and tear on the teeth starts to take its toll. The likelihood of tooth and jaw problems increases, and where teeth may have been repaired before it is not always feasible to keep doing so. Not all tooth loss is due to age, however. Teeth may also be lost due to accidents or other trauma, or due to certain medications or hereditary conditions.
Replacing missing teeth may avoid complications. In addition to the impact missing teeth can have on confidence and social interactions, they also allow other teeth to shift. This can lead to tooth wear, and eventually to changes in facial structure.
My valued colleagues are hand-picked and have to demonstrate the highest level of clinical ability, and to be warm and friendly people who love looking after others.
Sometimes, we keep it in the family. My wife also plays a key role in Blue Finch Dental, ensuring our values of treatment excellence and family care are transmitted through the company.
There are several options when it comes to replacing missing teeth. Dentures are one option, but you may consider bridges or implants depending on your particular situation. At Blue Finch Dental we believe in giving you all the necessary information to make an informed choice as to what’s best for you.
Common reasons to choose dentures over other forms of treatment include:
Cost-effectiveness – dentures are often cheaper than other forms of tooth replacement.
Non-invasive – dentures may appeal to patients who do not want to undergo more extensive dental treatments. They do not generally need shaping of other teeth to fit a bridge – or surgery – as in the case of tooth implants.
Suitable for patients with lower jaw bone density – as we age or due to various other factors, the jawbone naturally becomes less dense. This may make the patient less suitable for dental implants or treatments such as bridges which rely on the strength of existing teeth.
Easy to care for – especially in the case of removable dentures, they are much easier to look after, keep clean and care for than fixed dental treatments such as implants. This is really important for the cared and their carers.

There are various types of dentures available and we will ensure you have all the information necessary to make the right choice for you.
As the name suggests, they can be removed from the mouth, making them easy to maintain and clean. Removable dentures are a non-invasive treatment, so they require minimum surgery and/or shaping of your remaining natural teeth or gum.
Removable dentures are available as both full or partial dentures.
Full dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. They may be formed of a gum-coloured base which fits over the natural gum, supporting a complete set of prosthetic teeth. They are typically held in place by suction, or by a dental adhesive.
Partial dentures are used to fill gaps where some of the natural teeth still remain. They consist of a metal or acrylic framework which fits to the existing teeth and supports a set of artificial teeth.
If there are very few teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw, or the long-term health of the remaining natural teeth is questionable, it may be better to remove the remaining teeth and fit full dentures than to attach partial dentures to teeth which are unlikely to maintain the health required to support them. The decision rests on many factors and your dentist will discuss the best option for you.
Fixed and semi-fixed dentures (implant retained and supported dentures) may offer the benefits of being a more stable solution. These dentures are fixed permanently to dental implants, which are artificial tooth roots placed into your bone.
The process of getting your denture begins, as with all treatments, with an initial consultation to understand the overall health of your teeth and gums, and to address any underlying issues such as diseased teeth or gum disease, hygiene issues, etc., before moving on to finding the right sort of dentures for you and beginning the treatment.
First of all your dentist will take impressions of your mouth and existing teeth. This might be in the form of a traditional mould, or by using a dental scanner. This may take place over one or two visits. From this impression, your dentist will then create a “trial set” of dentures. Adjustments can be made to the trial dentures to ensure fit, comfort and appearance. Once you and we are happy with the trial dentures, we’ll have the final set made. Final dentures are made of durable materials such as acrylic resin, and colour-matched to your natural teeth.
Once your final dentures are ready, you’ll return to the clinic for the fitting. We’ll ensure the correct fitting of your dentures and that you are happy with the finished results. We’ll also provide you with all the information you need on caring for your dentures, eating and so on.
In the weeks following your denture fit we review the fit of your denture and adjust any tight areas. We will not make your new denture and “kick you out the door”.
After that, we advise you to visit us for regular checkups just like any other patient, to ensure that all is going well with your dentures and your general oral health.
At Blue Finch Dental we provide top-class private dental treatment for all the family. Clear retainers that invisibly realign your teeth, Invisalign® has become the biggest name in retainer technology for aduts.
We are a registered Invisalign® practitioner and can help you from answering your Invisalign questions through to the procedure and retainer fitting itself.
Contact us and one of our dentists will be in touch to answer all your questions about whether Invisalign might be the right treatment for you. Alternatively, have a look at our Invisalign page.
Suitable for more complex cases where retainers alone will not be enough to straighten your teeth, labial orthodontics involves fitting a clear or tooth coloured component to the outside of your teeth. Sometimes this treatment might be followed up with retainer treatment. Your dentist will help you understand the right option for you.
Lingual orthodontics are fitted to the inside of your teeth rather than the outside, meaning no-one will be able to notice that you are using orthodontics.
Although possible and recommended courses of treatment depend on the complexity and idiosyncrasies of your particular case, lingual orthodontics might be a better choice for you if it is important to you that your orthodontics go unnoticed – particularly if you have professional considerations (e.g. an actor).
Your dentist will help you understand the right treatment option for you.
